Coronavirus Information for DAN Members

Divers Alert Network is closely monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak and its potential impact on our members. DAN Headquarters is closed, but our operations continue uninterrupted. DAN staff are working remotely to provide the services on which our members and the diving community rely.

For the most up-to-date information about COVID-19, members should visit World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Health, and local government websites.

If you have questions about your DAN membership or dive accident insurance please call our Membership Team on +61-3-9886 9166 or email us at infoap@DAN.org.

FAQ's

DAN World's Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Benefit

DAN World’s membership includes a package of medical transportation services that are available to members who travel more than 80km from home. To be eligible for these benefits, you must be suffering from a medical condition that requires immediate transportation from the place where the medical emergency occurred to the nearest appropriate medical facility for treatment.

DAN World continues to provide this membership service. HOWEVER, due to the stress that COVID-19 is placing on medical facilities and evacuation service providers worldwide, members should know that medical transportation, access to medical facilities and other services provided by DAN World may be delayed or unavailable due to government action or other circumstances beyond DAN’s control. If you are confirmed to have COVID-19, private medical transportation services may be unavailable to you.

Does DAN World provide evacuation coverage for coronavirus?

DAN World continues to operate 24/7, and specialists are available to assist members with their medical evacuation needs. But please note this is a rapidly evolving situation, and DAN World may not have the latest information about border closings, mandatory quarantines or other government or health agency actions that might restrict your ability to travel and/or DAN World’s ability to provide evacuation assistance in certain countries and regions. Please contact the DAN World membership team for more information.

What happens if the borders close where I’m visiting and I need medical evacuation?

Since each situation will be different (varying by country, reason for evacuation, illness, etc.) you should contact DAN World for assistance on +1-919-684 9111. While DAN World will be unable to effect evacuations when prevented by government mandate, every effort will be made to work with local authorities to make sure you are transported to a place where you can get needed medical care.

What will happen if I contract COVID-19 on a trip? Will I be quarantined or evacuated?

These decisions will be made by local authorities, government officials and medical professionals in the location where you become ill. Some are treating in place (where you contract the illness) while others are evacuating infected persons to central facilities or their home countries. Regardless, the current protocol is to require a quarantine of at least 14 days following exposure. For those who test positive for COVID-19, the period could be substantially longer (depending on the length of a person’s illness), and you will likely be quarantined for an extended period of time (either in a facility or self-quarantine).

DAN World’s dive injury (treatment) insurance program provides no coverage for expenses arising from quarantine.

What if I travel to a high-risk country and need medical evacuation?

First, DAN advises against travelling to high-risk countries. DAN World has limited ability to provide services in countries that have been affected by COVID-19.

Dive Injury (Treatment) Insurance

Would my dive injury insurance (Master Plan or Preferred Plan) apply if I were to contract COVID-19 on a dive trip?

Your DAN dive injury insurance provides coverage for in-water diving accidents and illnesses. DAN does not provide coverage for medical treatment for COVID-19 since it is not a diving accident or illness. Your primary health insurance, travel insurance or other medical expense plans and various government programs should be available to cover these costs.

Does my membership or dive injury insurance cover being quarantined?

Neither DAN membership nor DAN's dive injury (treatment) insurance plans provide benefits in cases where a member is quarantined.

Am I covered if my liveaboard or dive operator cancels my trip because of the coronavirus? What if the country I'm travelling in or to closes its borders and I'm prevented from taking a trip?

DAN's dive injury insurance plans do not provide coverage for a trip that is cancelled due to COVID-19, nor is coverage provided for border closures that prevent you from taking a trip. DAN dive injury insurance plans are designed to cover treatment costs associated with a covered in-water accident or illness.
